EN // Both coming from an architectural background, Cinzia Romanin and Thomas Noceto are photographers with a documentary approach. Fascinated by human and territorial dimensions, they use the audiovisual medium as a profoundly reflective and democratic tool. Driven by the need to move away from energy-intensive and polluting materials like concrete, their project *Terragraphy* invites to an immersion into the world of raw earth construction across the Franco-Belgian region. By photographing with a large-format camera and handcrafted negatives made from clay, they aim to convey the poetry of this material taken from beneath our feet—infinitely malleable or simply returnable to its original soil. As part of their Diaphane creative residency, Cinzia and Thomas spent eight weeks meeting artisans and residents who are fighting to revive and valorize this material in the geological region of the Pays de Bray, known for its clay, its centuries-old built heritage, and its vernacular craftsmanship.
FR // Tous deux issus du milieu de l’architecture, Cinzia Romanin et Thomas Noceto sont deux photographes à la pratique documentaire. Fascinés par les dimensions humaines et territoriales, ils utilisent le médium audio-visuel comme un outil éminemment réflexif et démocratique. Partant de la nécessité de se distancer des matériaux énergivores et polluants tels que le béton, leur projet Terragraphy invite à s’immerger dans le milieu de la construction en terre crue sur le territoire franco-belge. C’est ainsi qu’en photographiant à l’aide d’une chambre technique et de négatifs artisanaux composés d’argile, ils souhaitent retransmettre la poésie de cette matière prélevée sous nos pieds, pouvant être remodelée à l’infini ou simplement réintégrée à son sol d’origine. Dans le cadre de leur résidence de création, Cinzia et Thomas sont partis durant huit semaines à la rencontre d’artisan.e.s et d’habitant.e.s se battant pour la revalorisation de ce matériau sur le territoire géologique du Pays de Bray connu pour son argile, son héritage bâti centenaire et ses savoirs-faire vernaculaires.

EN // By using handcrafted clay-made films and earth pigments, this project has then been an opportunity to dare and invent sensitive explorations in which the subject becomes the object as a substantial fragment of reality. Due to its affinity with light-sensitive processes, the denomination ‘Terragraphy’ has been invented to describe a practice that reveals each landscape through its own materiality.
FR // En utilisant des films d’argile et des pigments de terre fabriqués à la main, ce projet a été l’occasion d’oser et d’inventer des explorations sensibles dans lesquelles le sujet devient l’objet tel un fragment de réalité. En raison de son affinité avec les processus sensibles à la lumière, la dénomination « Terragraphie » a été inventée afin de décrire une pratique révélant chaque paysage au travers de sa propre matérialité.
